Open Arms

COVID-19 STATEMENT:

Like everyone in our community, we too at Open Arms are experiencing the dramatic impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. From changing our daily operations to canceling fundraisers to altering our delivery methods, everything is changing. But please rest assured that we are closely following official guidelines (from the CDC and the MN Department of Health) and state/federal recommendations and orders, all in order to continue our primary mission: to cook and deliver free, healthy meals to our clients in need.

Key points:

  • Open Arms is considered an “essential” business and is part of the Twin Cities’ critical sector response to COVID-19. With this understanding, we can and will continue to operate and deliver meals to our clients with life-threatening illnesses and compromised immune systems.
  • We are taking all precautionary measures to ensure the safety of our community, which includes our clients, volunteers, staff, and more.
  • We have received many emails and phone calls from the Open Arms’ community asking how they can help our clients during the pandemic. The best way to help at the moment is to donate. Your donations will ensure that we can continue providing emergency bags of shelf-stable food for our clients and their families, delivering medically-tailored meals to the increasing number of clients who need our help, and stocking our supplies so we can be there for our clients when they need us most.

General Group Volunteer information:

We have fun, flexible group opportunities in the kitchen, on delivery, and at the farm, as well as special opportunities for events and projects.

Whether you’re looking for a one-time experience or an ongoing shift, we’ll work with you to find a opportunity that fits your group.

To get started, please email our staff:

To learn more about our group opportunities and schedule your event please contact us at groups@openarmsmn.org

We have shifts for groups available Monday through Saturday. We can accommodate groups ranging between 8–25 members, and shifts typically last 2.5 hours. Here’s a sampling of our opportunities:

  • One-time: Choose a single shift or set of shifts for your group.
  • Ongoing: Select a daily, weekly, or monthly shift for your whole group or take turns attending.
  • Become a satellite delivery hub: A member of your group picks up multiple routes from Open Arms, then distributes them to multiple drivers at your location, and these drivers deliver the meals on short routes to clients located near you.
  • Other opportunities: Help with special events, decorate delivery bags, run a cereal drive, and more. If you have ideas for how you’d like to work with us, we would love to hear them!

With Open Arms, we nourish body, mind and soul.

It’s a simple notion: people who are sick should not be without food. Yet it happens every day that people in our community with life-threatening illnesses find themselves unable to shop or cook — and, often, without the support network to help.  That’s where we come in. Open Arms is the only nonprofit organization in Minnesota that cooks and delivers free meals specifically tailored to meet the nutrition needs of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, MS, ALS, breast cancer and more than 60 other diseases. We also work with communities in sub-Saharan Africa, providing food and technical assistance for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Open Arms is also unique in its phenomenal community of donors and more than 1,900 volunteers — the folks who work with us every day, ensuring that we continue to do our work with enthusiasm, joy and success.  Open Arms relies on the tremendous dedication of our 1,900 volunteers for every aspect of our operations – we could not function without them. Our volunteers tell us that they love working with Open Arms because they get to see the tangible impact of their work, whether they handle vegetables in the kitchen or hand food directly to a person in need.

Join us and make a profound difference in the lives of our clients while having fun and meeting others. We have a wide variety of opportunities and will work with you to find the perfect fit for your skills, interests and availability.
