Mentor and Tutor Youth: Project for Pride in Living

Program Description: Project for Pride in Living (PPL) builds the hope, assets, and self-reliance of individuals and families who have lower incomes by providing transformative affordable housing and employment readiness services. PPL’s tutoring & mentoring program, PPL Scholars, serves families transitioning out of chronic homelessness by supporting youth in grades K-5 to thrive through relationship building, literacy tutoring, and enrichment activities in 1:1 matches with volunteer Tutor-Mentors.

Responsibilities:

  • Work 1:1 with a young person on positive social skills, literacy, and enrichment activities such as art or free play
  • Develop a relationship with a young person using a strengths based and culturally informed approach
  • Help maintain a safe, productive, and fun environment
  • Communicate with staff to provide feedback on young person’s academic and social progress

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently and maintain consistent weekly attendance
  • Enthusiasm to learn alongside young people
  • Patience, understanding, and flexibility to adapt to each youth’s needs for the day
  • Commitment to empowering others by sharing your skills and knowledge
  • Experience with youth in grades K-5th helpful
  • Passion for working with youth from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Interest in working with youth at varied levels of academic and social development
  • Comfortable interacting with parents/guardians to support youth success
